Domestic Violence Education Programs

Rainbow Services offers educational programs for schools, businesses, events, and individual advocates to encourage awareness of domestic violence in our communities. Below are some of the ways we can bring DV-related education to your organization. Email training@rainbowservicesdv.org or use the contact form below to inquire.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, whether it manifests as physical, emotional, financial, psychological, or any other kind of violence, affects 1 in 3 women and 1 in 7 men.  It has many aspects and impacts a multitude of groups ranging from school children of all ages to medical professionals; parent groups to employers; military to nail spas; etc.

Rainbow Services is dedicated to the idea that the more everyone knows the sooner the problem can be eradicated.  To that end, we are pleased to offer educational programs to you – whoever you are, whatever would benefit you the most – in person at your school or place of business or virtually, for 30 minutes to 6 hours or more, and tailored to meet your needs.

Currently, we are using the Zoom platform which is available on computer, tablet, and phone.  Regardless of whether the presentation is in person or virtual, we encourage participation and questions.  Our aim is to be sure that clear and correct information is provided in every session and that attendees come away with an understanding of domestic violence.  No prior classes or certificates are necessary.

School and Youth Programs

Rainbow offers age-appropriate domestic violence education for school and youth groups covering topics ranging from consent to teen dating violence.

Domestic violence is a learned behavior that is based in the need for power over others.  According to the Resource Center on Domestic Violence: Child Protection and Custody, “One researcher has estimated conservatively that at least 10 to 20 percent of children are exposed to intimate partner violence annually, with as many as one-third exposed at some point during childhood or adolescence.” A 2006 report by the US Department of Justice found that “Children are residents of the households experiencing intimate partner violence in 43 percent of incidents involving female victims.”

Domestic violence is a generational problem.  Children who grow up in families with domestic violence are much more likely to become either victims or people who harm than children who grow up in homes without violence.  In addition, there are other risk factors and health consequences such as mood and anxiety disorders, risk of substance abuse and school-related problems, and cognitive impairment.

In two separate studies, the CDC found that nearly one in ten of U.S. high school students had been hit, slapped or physically hurt on purpose by their boyfriend/girlfriend in a 12 month period; and approximately one in three adolescent girls in the U.S. is a victim of physical, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner.

The topics that we cover include, but are not limited to:

40-Hour DV Advocate Training

Rainbow’s 40-Hour Domestic Violence Counselor/Advocate Training was created for both volunteers and staff and is a requirement for working directly with survivors and their children. But our attendees have told us that the information is both valuable and interesting for anyone in any walk of life.

The training is an overview of many different areas of domestic violence – at risk populations, how it manifests, etc. – and answers many questions like: Why don’t survivors leave? What causes domestic violence? Whose fault is it?

Some of the topics that we focus on are:

An overview of domestic violence
• LGBTQ issues in Domestic Violence
• Substance Abuse and Domestic Violence
• Housing/Public Assistance/hotline
• Trauma Informed Services
• Effect of domestic violence on children
• Abusive teen relationships

Everyone who completes the course will receive the certificate needed to work or volunteer at a domestic violence shelter agency in California.

Rainbow holds two 40-hour sessions a year.  Generally, they are once in the early spring and once in the early fall.  Training sessions take place twice during the week in the evening.

Registration for the full training is $150 which covers all materials and fees.

*This class is for working with victims of domestic violence. It is not the training for the batterer intervention programs nor does it fulfill any court ordered requirements.
